British Mania: Achieving London Street Style

With the premieres of BBC shows Downton Abbey and Sherlock over the past couple weeks, British mania is back for the winter/spring season. Both of these series have an enormous power to grip television viewers and draw them into their worlds. Downton Abbey's gripping drama lures me in with the beautiful scenery and clothing, while Sherlock's whitty and brashly charismatic characters keep me hooked. Yet, Anglophilia is not a new phenomenon. Britain's rise as a world power since the sixteenth century and diffusion of British culture internationally has caused many outside the nation to desire British qualities and characteristics. This became especially prominent during the 1960s with the beginning of the rock and roll era with The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Young adults and teens everywhere tried to soak up the culture modeling themselves after Twiggy and other icons.

Today's fashion is no different. While Paris may be quintessentially boutique chic, London screams street chic. Styles are more laid back, patterns and colors are effortlessly mixed, and while polished, a bit more individuality comes to play in the fashions in London. Are you traveling across the pond or just wish to achieve London street style? Follow these four cues from fashion gurus in Britain:

London Street Style: All Black

London: Street Style - Casual Chic

London: Street Style - pattern play

London: Street Style - hat fever
