Falling for Corduroy

Corduroy is a long-despised fabric often thought to be reserved for garish children's overalls and old professors' outfits. Yet, this textile has a rich and dynamic history. It's name originates from 17th century England from a misspelling of France's "corde de roi," meaning cloth of kings. The fabric became particularly popular after the Industrial Revolution in 18th century England where the production became quicker and easier. As it became more accessible for the working classes, corduroy fell out of favor with the wealthy classes. It has emerged throughout the twentieth century many times as a popular fabric, especially during the hippie counter-culture movement of the 1960s and grunge style of the 1990s.

Today corduroy is making a comeback in the fashion community with a fabulous refresh of bright colors and toothpick pant styles. I've recently fallen in love with the material. Not only does it keep me warm, but it pairs perfectly with my fall sweaters and chambray! I particularly love it in jewel tones as the fabric instantly brightens up into a modern style. My favorite pairs are from Target (I own a pair in amber, grey, and camel) and J.Crew. I love using them as a replacement for my jeans this fall, rolling them up to go with ankle boots and a plaid shirt! They're perfect for the fall and winter!
