Travel Fashion Tips

As I was sitting in the airport waiting for my brother's plane to leave on Sunday, I was reminded of the vital importance of wearing proper attire when travelling, especially on planes. Since I travelled frequently while I studied abroad in Oxford, I quickly learned the fashion do's and don't's for travel. The number one rule is to be comfortable. No one enjoys sitting squashed on a plane for several hours wearing a too tight skirt or stiff jeans. This is why I always go with a pair of black leggings. They are comfortable and chic. I often pair this with a interesting cami that is made of jersey material or something of the like (definitely not silk!) and top it with a soft cardigan or wrap sweater. I always bring this extra layer, as well as a scarf, just in case it is a bit cold on the plane, as it usually is. Also, it is very important to wear comfortable flats that are easy to slip out of when going through airport security.

However, one must never wear those ugly, baggy sweatpants that you keep for lounging around the house. They are not flattering on anyone and should never be worn in public, let alone in a confined space next to strangers. It makes you look like a slob. As Dr. Armstrong said in an earlier post, "If you intentionally dress sloppy, then some of us are going to suspect you of that." While you may not think that you need to worry about impressing people on planes, dressing appropriately in all situations will make you stand out. On the other side of the spectrum, wearing 5" high heels on planes is completely impractical and quite frankly makes you look ridiculous. No one is impressed that you are wearing that high of a shoe while travelling, but rather they feel sorry for your poor feet as you pull that 100 pound suitcase.

In essence, for travel dress practically but consciously. Oh, and make sure you bring those noise canceling ear-bud headphones to block out the sounds of your neighbor's snores!
