Style Icon: Katherine Hepburn

This blog post is in honor of Katherine Hepburn's birthday yesterday. This charming, beautiful, strong woman became famous for her roles in The Philadelphia Story and On Golden Pond. She won her first Academy Award in 1933 for Best Actress for her performance in Morning Glory. Over the course of her acting career she received 12 Oscar nominations, a record that she held until 2003 when Maryl Streep was nominated for the 13th time. Katherine was a self-willed, stubborn, and private woman who refused to sign autographs or attend photoshoots. She was famous for wearing her high-waisted trousers and little to no makeup. At the end of her career, she returned to Broadway to star in Coco and The West Side Waltz. Katherine died on 29 June 2003 at the age of 96.

Katherine Hepburn is an icon for so many reasons, not only was she inspirational for her insistance to be her own woman and not be controlled by men, but she also had great fashion. Her high waisted pants made her look so chic, business-like, and elegant. However, I found a few pictures of her, which can be seen below, from her performance in The Philadelphia Story that really caught my eye. The ornately detailed sweeping floor-length dress, deep side parted wavy hair, and bright red lipstick are a divine combination. Today, one can find similar flowy dresses with embellishments rather easily. I like the one below for its soft sleeves and gold details. I would pair it with a white or nude shoe, some small earrings, and a bright coral-red lipstick. This outfit would be perfect for a wearing to a summer opera or other more formal occasion.
