Some Levi Lovin'

138 years ago today a style was born. On May 20, 1873 Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis were given a patent to make a durable work pant that held up in the gold mines of California. They created blue jeans. Blue jeans were generally reserved for workers and US Navy personnel until the trend became popularized in the mid-1900s by American teenagers. Over the years they have been adapted to accomodate for the evolution of fashion. They come in a variety of styles and shades, from bell-bottom, to jeggings, to high-waisted, and in dark wash, bleached, or printed. With all of these options, I decided to put together a handy go-to guide for women's jeans according to body type.

The first rule of thumb for buying a good pair of jeans is to try many stores and many different pairs. For instance, sometimes I have to try on the same style and size of jeans at American Eagle multiple times because they are hand-sewn and can vary slightly. AE is good for girls who have skinnier legs, while Gap tends to fit girls with wider legs.

Also, remember, dark wash denim is flattering on everyone for it is very slimming. Lighter wash is harder to pull off, and should be reserved for spring and summer months. Women more bottom-heavy should avoid this as well as other attention-grabbing colors. Instead, pair darker jeans with a fun, brighter top that will draw the eyes upwards towards your face.

Now I don't generally recommend sexes switching styles (especially you boys who wear women's skinny jeans), but for the boyfriend jeans I must make an exception. These are super comfortable and can be easily worn around the house, to class, on a lunch date, or for running errands. Wearing them rolled up shows off a little leg and give you the opportunity to wear a really fun shoe.
Skinny jeans are by far my favorite jean. While they aren't always the most comfortable, they look great and can be worn so many ways and to many different occasions. They can be paired with a sparkly top to go out or a t-shirt to go to the store. Skinny jeans are great, but should be reserved for petite and tall women because they can throw off the balance of the body.
Straight leg jeans are classy and more versatile than skinny jeans. They have all of the benefits of skinny jeans, but can be worn by all shapes and sizes. These are must-have for any woman's closet.

Boot cut jeans also can be worn in many situations if in a dark wash and look very flattering on more curvy women. Petite women, like me, with few curves get swallowed in the slight flare, which makes us look disproportional. The slight flare balances out wider hips or a bigger chest, which helps draw the eye downward to create a sense of line and height.
