A Perfect Bike Ride

On June 26, 1819 the velocipede, an early bicycle, was first patented by W. K. Clarkson, Jr in the United States. The invention had actually begun in Germany and then moved to France where it gained great popularity. The velocipede had one big wheel on the front and a much smaller wheel at the back. It wasn't until the late 1800s when the pedals were attached to the front axel, spokes were added, the wheels began to even out in size, and it was renamed the bicycle. Further additions were added in the 1890s including the brake, chain mechanism, and inflated tires. As the invention became more lightweight and easier to manage, the popularity for the new mode of transportation soared and by 1899 1 million bicycles were being produced.

Going on bike rides on cooler evenings seems quintessentially perfect for summertime. It was a favorite activity of mine growing up out in the country as my dad and I would bike to the nearby town. In Europe and especially in Oxford biking was a part of daily life as adults would bike to and from work or school. There definitely is an art to the exercise, especially in busy urban areas, something that I have not quite gotten the hang of. A few weeks ago I tried out my mom's old Schwinn road bike for the first time in downtown KC. It was an experience, but I think I prefer the open paths and empty roads of the country.
