First Date: Jazz Club or Speakeasy

Destination: The Phoenix Jazz Club or Manifesto, Kansas City
When: Weekend Night after 7pm

Ok, so the man has good taste. A date night at local jazz club - where musicians play some sultry tunes - or hidden speakeasy - where the space is intimate and drinks are strong - is creative, smart, and a bit daring on his part. He has hit on the 1920’s theme that is so popular right now, especially with release of The Great Gatsby in theaters in May! So how do you prepare?

Conversation Starter:
The Roaring Twenties was a glamorous decade as families began to have expendable income in a blossoming economy and the nation celebrated the end of World War I. Hemlines were raised as hair was cropped creating an iconic flapper look. Teenagers and young adults felt a sense of freedom as they escaped from home and frequented those controversial jazz clubs in the family Ford Model-T car. Although Prohibition was put into effect in 1919, adults found ways around the law by visiting infamous speakeasies.

Here in Kansas City, one man ruled the town, Tom Pendergast. “Boss Tom” Pendergast ran the mafia and controlled the political machine through bribing police, running speakeasies, controlling gambling, and keeping political friends in power. His reach went far as he helped put Harry Truman in a US senate seat and made Guy Brassfield Park governor of Missouri. Most of his speakeasies and bootlegging tunnels were boarded up never to be found, unless stumbled upon during construction today. Fun note: Manifesto has a drink called the Pendergast, which is quite delicious!
