On December 18, 1892 the world premiere of The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky was performed at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ballet was taken from Alexandre Dumas’ The Tale of the Nutcracker, which was adapted from The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Unfortunately for Tchaikovsky, the performance was not well received by the audience and it was discarded until revived in 1919. In 1944 the ballet was re-imagined by William Christiansen for the San Francisco Ballet. Finally, in 1954 George Balanchine staged The Nutcracker for the New York City Ballet in 1954. It became such a success that it became an annual tradition that spread across the country.

There’s just something magical about this ballet that draws in crowds year after year. I believe that in part that is due to their intricate filigreed costumes that instantly capture the eye. The female dancers in their full tulle skirts, ornate bodices, and delicate accessories bring a whimsical beauty to the stage. I’ve always loved watching these graceful dancers flit across the room dressed as Sugar Plum Fairies, Nutcracker Soldiers, and Russian Candy Canes.
This season fashion trends have been inspired by the ballet. Tulle skirts, soft candy colors, and elegant jewels are gracing the runways for the holidays and right now is the perfect time to try out these styles! Find a fun tulle skirt at stores like Forever21 or H&M. This item can be paired with plaid shirts or sequined tops depending on the venue. Add on some statement necklaces to up the drama for Christmas parties or New Year’s Eve. Try pairing the ballerina skirt with cute ankle boots to add some contrast to the outfit and balance out the femininity. You will end up looking super chic and party perfect!
