Gingham, Glenda, & Goodbye to Summer

On August 12, 1939 the Wizard of Oz first debuted in theaters in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin (say that ten times fast!) and began a nationwide phenomenon for Judy Garland and Technicolor movies. Originally in the book, the famous ruby red slippers were silver, but because of the new technology, the producers changed the shoes to red so as create a more visual impact. Now those ruby slippers are among the most coveted film memorabilia in history. Interestingly, there were five pairs of original shoes worn for the film - one pair was donated to the Smithsonian and another sold for $666,000 in an auction in 2000.

I remember as a child being mesmerized by Glenda's beautiful pink dress and enthralled with Dorothy's iconic midwestern gingham dress. Now as an adult, every time I wear navy gingham I immediately am taken back to summer days curled up on the couch watching the movie with my family. My gingham shirt is among one of my favorites in my closet. It's bold and pairs well with many different types of outfits. I love dressing it up with a skirt - I especially think a pop of neon works well with the navy. But it also can be made more casual with jeans - try black for a cool and chic style that still looks very adult.

MY WAY: GINGHAM SHIRT

This week marked my official end to summer. Thursday, the new teachers were called in for special orientation inservice meetings. We'll continue with more meetings Monday and Tuesday with the rest of the faculty and then students will return on Wednesday. We were told to keep dress casual, so for my first day I wore jeans, but I chose my magenta polka dot pants for a bit of fun. I elevated their laid-back style with a lace black t-shirt and statement necklace. It worked well and was comfortable enough for sitting in chairs all morning!

  1. The Wizard of Oz has always been my favorite! I was once the wicked witch of the west for Halloween five years in a row...my mom put an end to that. Love your take on gingham!
